Do you ever wonder how the pros get people to watch their videos from start to finish and actually take action?

It’s not magic. It comes down to understanding a few key psychological triggers that work like clockwork.

I’ve narrowed it down to three core triggers that I use in my own video content. If you want to increase your viewership, drive more engagement, and get more leads, these are the things you need to start using right now.

Let’s break them down.

1. Curiosity: The Power of Open Loops

Curiosity is a massive motivator, and one of the best tools you have in your content creation toolbox is the open loop.

You see this all the time in movies and TV shows where they introduce a storyline or question early on, but don’t give you the answer until the end. That’s what keeps you watching.

In videos, it works the same way. I opened this very topic by telling you to stick around for the third trigger because it’s the most powerful.

That’s an open loop. It gets people to stay until the end because they want closure.

Even shows like those on The Travel Channel use this technique all the time. When they do a countdown of the top 10 beaches, you stick around because you want to see what takes the #1 spot.

Humans hate unanswered questions. So use that to your advantage. Tease what’s coming. Drop a clue. Then circle back and deliver.

That’s how you keep people glued to your videos.

2. Relatability: Speak to the Person You Used to Be

Ray Higdon says it best: “Help the person you used to be.” That hits home because people connect with those who’ve walked a similar path. That’s why relatability is such a powerful psychological trigger.

Not everyone will relate to your story, and that’s fine. The ones who do… those are your people. Those are your ideal viewers, leads, and future customers.

And the best way to tap into relatability? Share your story.

Tell them what you went through. The good, the bad, the raw truth. Share how you overcame something, because chances are someone watching is going through the exact same thing right now.

When people hear your story and see how you made it through, they’re going to connect with you on a deeper level. That connection keeps them watching.

3. Social Proof: Build Trust Through Others

Social proof is when people see that others are already getting results or endorsing what you’re offering. It could be a case study, a testimonial, or even better an interview.

Bringing someone else onto your platform and letting them share their experience builds your credibility.

That might seem counterintuitive. You might think, “Why would I spotlight someone else when I’m trying to promote me?”

But here’s the truth: when you promote others and give them your stage, you become a trusted resource. And in marketing, trust is everything.

The more your audience sees you as someone who brings valuable insights and resources—even if it’s not always from you—the more they’ll trust your recommendations. And that’s when conversions happen.

Final Thoughts

These three psychological triggers—curiosity, relatability, and social proof—are absolutely crucial for getting people to not just watch your videos but to engage and take action.

Use open loops to spark curiosity. Tell your story to build relatability. Leverage others to establish social proof.

Start implementing these now, and you’ll see the difference.
