Want to increase your email open rates? In no secret that email marketing is one of the most important ways to build a highly profitable business that produces for you night and day.

Which is certainly what you want if you’ve started a home business right?

Of course you may have heard the myth that email marketing is dead. Which is pure silliness from people who either stink at email marketing or they just want to keep you away to eliminate the competition.

The truth is… email marketing is more prevalent than ever and if you are not sure why you should build an email list, then check out this post here

However, it has gotten tougher to get attention with your emails because there’s way more competition (proof that it’s nowhere near dead).

Not to mention that email platforms have done plenty to make it harder to get your emails through their spam filters and into the inbox. Especially Google and Yahoo.

To make sure you are up to date with the latest email standards, be sure to check out my latest post on how to navigate Google and Yahoo email changes here.

But don’t worry because this blog post will show you how to stay on the good side of email platforms, stand out in the inbox, get your emails open, and make sure your emails get results.

Here are 5 Secrets to Increase Your Email Open Rates!

Secret #1: Create Curiosity Based “Shocking” Headline

Because curiosity works amazingly in emails. And sometimes being a little shocking is the best way to get your email open.

This works especially well if you’re trying to boost opens from a list that’s gone a little stale.

Sometimes you’ve got to shock them into opening up.

Of course, you can’t just be shocking to be shocking. You’ve got to address the shock quickly in the email, or else your list will lose trust with you.

You also cannot use this strategy all the time. This is just to bring them back into the fold.

Secret #2: Make Your Subject Lines POP with Emojis!

Believe it or not, the idea of using emojis in subject lines is a bit controversial.

Many frown upon them highly. However, the evidence is becoming more and more clear that emojis increase open rates, as well as click-thru rates.

There are a couple of reasons for this.

First of all… emojis are a normal part of our lexicon today.

We use them every day to get our points across in communication in texts and emails to friends and even on social media.

Emails to your list are exactly that. A friend talking to a friend, like friends talk to friends.

Emojis also have the major benefit of helping you get attention in your subscriber’s crowded inbox.

Emojis are eye-catchers. This means in an inbox that’s mostly full of text-only subject lines, your emoji will bring your subscriber’s eyes to your subject line first.

Which means you win the attention contest! (of course, the text in your subject line must complete the process for the open.

Just make sure your emojis fit the topic of the email as much as possible. There’s no use putting a snowman in a message about your summer sale… unless of course, you’re talking about many winters stinks. 🙂

And like everything, don’t overdo it. One emoji is almost plenty…unless a combination of emojis tells a story. Then if it’s done right…it’s okay.

Personally, I don't use this enough in my marketing, but it's mainly due to my CRM limitations.

Email open rates Secret #3: Make Sure You’re Not Landing in the SPAM folder or Gmail Promo Tab!

One thing that will destroy your open rates fastest is landing in the spam folder, OR landing in the Promo Tab in Gmail.

Chances are a great majority of your email list are subscribers using Gmail. When you land in the promo tab, you almost may as well be landing in the spam folder. And it will crush your open rates.

The fastest way to know if your emails are landing in the main inbox of your subscribers is to check your emails on different platforms. This is easily done by opening free accounts on each of the major platforms.

Before sending it to your list, send yourself a test email. Don’t open them or click any links, however. This will change the algorithm.

You’re simply looking to see if anything you’re writing in the subject line or email itself is triggering a spam filter or landing you in the promo tab!

There are other reasons this could be happening, but that’s a blog post for another day.

Secret #4: Stay Away from the Naughty List of SPAM Trigger Words!

So how do you give yourself the best chance of landing in the primary inbox?  Simply stay away from spammy words that will keep you from there.

Of course there are some culprits that will trigger spam such as free, money, income, cash, business opportunity, financial independence, etc.

But there are plenty more. Simply do a search on Google for “email spam words to avoid” and you’ll see plenty of lists that will help you stay out of trouble!

Secret #5: Send to Non-Openers with a different subject line!

Many people make the mistake of thinking that emails are a one-and-done thing. You send one email, and no matter how many opens you get you’re done.

But the truth is you could be missing out on a ton of new opens and therefore sales and sign-ups!

Because there are a number of reasons people won’t open your emails. They may not be checking emails when you send your email. Or they may not resonate with your subject line.

Or they may just be having a rough day and aren’t in the mood for what you’ve got to say TODAY…no matter how compelling the subject line is.

There are plenty of reasons.

So your best bet is to try to reach those people who didn’t open by targeting ONLY those subscribers. You can do that inside your email campaign system.

Once you’ve segmented the people who did not open, simply change the subject line and send the same email again.

The great thing about this is that you’ll be able to see what kind of subject lines get the best results for YOUR list!
